Caravan, Campervan or Motorhome, what’s the best choice for you?

So you are at the point where you have decided the open road is for you. That’s great! But now you have some tough decisions ahead. One of the most common questions we get here at CampervanCo is ‘Should I go for a campervan, a motorhome or a caravan?’ We of course feel it’s a campervan all the way but we know it’s a personal decision and we want to help you make the best choice to suit you so we have put together some details on the difference between the three so you can choose the best option for you.

Campervan, Motorhome or Caravan, what’s the difference?

To many people, the terms caravan, motorhome and campervan are interchangeable. In fact, there are key differences between the three options, and it’s worth knowing what they are if you’re thinking of buying or hiring a rolling holiday home for your future adventures.

What is a caravan?

A caravan is a separate living quarters towed behind a regular vehicle. The main benefit of a caravan is its flexibility. As it’s a trailer, you can set it up where you want to stay and then use your normal vehicle for shopping and sightseeing. The space inside a caravan is likely to be larger too and you’re more likely to have full-size beds and kitchen appliances too. While we do admit this is something our caravan rivals do have on us, we still feel campervans are the way to go and we intend to back this up in detail later in this article, so keep reading.

What is a motorhome?

Unlike a caravan, a motorhome is a self-contained vehicle that can be driven. Going up in size (and in price tag), A-class motorhomes are what most people picture when they hear the word “motorhome”. Big vehicles with the driver’s cab integrated into the rest of the vehicle, these hotels on wheels are designed for spacious comfort.

What is a campervan?

Saving the best for last, we can now delve into what a campervan is and why it’s our favourite of the three.

A campervan is cool, compact and cosy. It is both your mode of transport and your bed for the night. Similar to a motorhome, a campervan is a single vehicle that can be driven, it doesn’t have to be towed like the caravan. The difference between motorhome vs campervan is that motorhomes are larger whereas campervans are smaller and more compact.

Why Use A Campervan? Campervans have been fitted out with a bed and a small kitchen, so you can go on holiday without the burden of a full caravan or motorhome. There is something undeniably exciting about packing everything into a vehicle that takes up little more space than a family car and hitting the open road for an adventure.

While there are many campervans for sale out there, we at CampervanCo are specialists in providing a custom-built camper van to suit your needs. With all our campervans, we customise your vehicle to your specifications, keeping in mind how you want to use it. We offer designs for hillwalkers, canoeists, cyclists, families, dog owners and ‘grey nomads’ (aka retirees), to name just a few groups who love our campervans.

Our campervans are ideal for those small country roads and can easily pass through cities and small villages. Fuel efficient and environmentally friendly, you can understand why we back up our products!

5 reasons to choose a campervan

Here are 5 reasons why we feel our campervans are the way to go.

1. No need to tow

If you have towed a trailer before, this is probably not something to consider but for the vast majority of people, this is a real downside to a caravan. Caravans take more skill to manoeuvre, particularly when reversing. You need to be aware of the pivot point where the trailer meets your vehicle at the tow-hitch, and it takes some practice before manoeuvring becomes smooth. When towing, parking is also a concern. Stopping off at a little village or cafe along the way may not be an option.

2. Campervans are compact

The compact size of campervans means getting to your destination is easy. If you can drive; you can drive a campervan. It’ll fit into most parking spaces and is a lot easier to get around tight corners and along country lanes so ideal for touring Scotland or the rest of the United Kingdom. Caravans and motorhomes can also become difficult to handle in adverse weather conditions. If it’s raining or windy, it can be much easier to lose control than if you are driving a compact campervan. This means advanced driving skills are required for safe travel.

3. Custom-built

At CampervanCo we know that everyone is unique. All of our campervans offer stylish, ergonomically designed, luxurious interiors that are uniquely designed for each model to maximise space and comfort. These beautiful campervans come with a host of luxury features and extras including air-con and heating, mood lighting, side blinds and USB chargers, pop tops, luxury seats and vari-track beds. With many options on appliances, hobs, microwaves, ovens and multiple storage layouts too you can build something that suits your travel needs with plenty of space.

4. Go anywhere with limited set-up

There is nothing like the open road. Nothing like leaving behind the city for an adventure full of possibility – big skies, mountains, forest, wilderness, and the sea. Taking off with everything you need right there with you in the rear-view mirror. No hotels required, no accommodation needed, no restaurants to book. Just you, your co-pilot, the kids, the dog and the road unravelling before you. With caravans and motorhomes, you usually need to plan your route with an end location in mind to avoid any issues. With a campervan, you can hit the open road and take more random and obscure routes to your final location. You can easily stop along the way at a small village cafe for instance without worrying about where to park your motorhome or how you will reverse your caravan. You can even wild camp along the way. Campervans are also easy to set up. With a pop-up roof and a quick swivel of a seat, you are good to go while your caravan friends have to fill up the Aquaroll with freshwater and position the wastewater.

5. Ecofriendly, high performance

At CampervanCo we currently offer two excellent unleaded campervans; The Nissan Elgrand – Velocity and The Toyota Alphard – Connect. Each van encompasses innovation and luxury, excellent fuel economy, ultra-low emissions and off-road thrills. We also offer a high-performance diesel, the Volkswagen T6 Transporter – Vision. Spacious with four, five and six-seater options, robust in 2WD or 4WD, the T6 is renowned for reliability and holding its value.
