Pioneering technology

The CampervanCo has pioneered the world’s first fully hybrid and tribrid 4WD campervans. These Toyota Alphard models are the first generation of environmentally friendly vehicles that can go off-road to remote locations, and deliver unrivalled fuel economy. They also offer spacious sleeping and living areas with stand-alone electric cooking and food prep facilities.

We offer two versions of the Alphard: the Eco Pioneer which sleeps four, and the Eco Explorer which sleeps five; both are available as a hybrid or tribrid.

Toyota Alphard Campervans

Custom built

With all our campervans, we customise your vehicle to your specifications, keeping in mind how you want to use your campervan. We offer designs for hillwalkers, canoeists, cyclists, families, dog owners and ‘grey nomads’ (aka retirees), to name just a few groups who love our Eco Campers.

Due to ultra-low emissions, fuel efficiency and the fact that these vans are easy  to drive and park, many clients use their van as a day-to-day runaround for the school run, supermarket shop or taking the pooch to the park. Then come the weekend, they pack up and head to the great outdoors for freedom and adventure.

Our hybrid and tribid Eco Campers are unique in terms of comfort, innovation, fuel economy and consideration for the environment.

Economical Hybrids offer a fantastic 40+mpg using Toyota’s renowned Synergy Drive technology. Super-efficient and economical, tribrids achieve 80mpg when compared financially to petrol costs. The tribrid can cover up to 1,000 miles without refuelling and provide extra power on motorways or in challenging environments.

Environmentally friendly The Toyota Alphard – Eco campers have a 4-star rating for emissions which are 75% lower than required by Japan’s 2005 Emission Standards. All base vehicles manufactured in or after 2006 conform to Ultra Low Emissions standards required, for example, by London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ).

Ergonomics and innovation Removal of gas and 240v hook up has freed up space to create wider, more comfortable beds and increased storage and living space. The new power management system powers the patented omni-slide induction hobs for indoor and outdoor cooking, and there are plenty of convenient USB points to charge up tablets, laptops and smartphones.

The Eco Campers range has automatic 4WD as standard, allowing you to take your campervan places that others would not dare. It switches from 2WD to 4WD depending on driving conditions. When driving normally on a road, only the front wheels are driven, giving maximum economy. But if you experience wheel slip or need extra acceleration, then the 4WD kicks in, switching off again when back to normal road or driving conditions. This seamless function allows you to drive safely and with confidence across a range of conditions, on or off-road.

Hybrid & tribrid campervans

Hybrid vehicles use electric motors to power the wheels when driving and recharge the battery when braking. Not only does this technology recycle otherwise lost energy, it uses less petrol and emits fewer gases and, crucially, less carbon monoxide – so they are much better for the environment.

Tribrid vehicles with the LPG (liquid petroleum gas) option are even greener, emitting fewer toxic gases than petrol or diesel. LPG is not only cleaner, it is also currently half the price of the other two fuels, offering range and exceptional economy that outperforms any campervan on the market.

The Eco Pioneer - Toyota Alphard - Campervan

Fuel Efficient

All combined, Eco Campers’ hybrid and tribrid models are not just the most versatile campervans on the market, but the most efficient, offering unbeatable economy and powered by engineering designed with the environment in mind

Our road tests recorded the hybrid Eco Camper giving great fuel economy at around 41mpg. With LPG often less than half the price of petrol or diesel at the pumps, the tribrid can give up to 80mpg when compared financially pound for pound to other fuels.

Hybrid Synergy Drive

Environmentally friendly

Our Eco Campers range also uses electric power in town, helping to keeping cities free from smog and pollution in line with Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZ). Unleaded petrol and super economical LPG guarantee unparalleled fuel efficiency. All base vehicles manufactured in 2006 or later are ULEZ compliant.

Eco Camper FAQs

Frequently asked questions on our groundbreaking hybrid and tribrid Eco Campers range.

What about the warranty?

We offer one year’s warranty on the base vehicle, two years’ warranty on the conversion package, units, electrics, heaters, bed and appliances and five years’ warranty on the hybrid battery. We always recommend customers bring their campervan in for a free six-month check. Please check with us directly before you have any work done on your van as going to another garage for repairs or maintenance may void your warranty. We are always at the end of the phone to give you any advice you might need.

Why hybrid and not a fully electric campervan?

When it comes to campervans we think it’s important your vehicle is not restricted by the range of its power supply, which hybrids are not. The hybrid batteries in our Eco Campers never run out as they self-charge, so they can go anywhere for any length of time – with up to 1,000 miles on one fuelling in the tribrid version. There are a few electric vehicles advertised as having a range of up to 200 miles. We road-tested all of these vehicles and spoke to some owners, who said they struggle to deliver more than 120 miles under normal driving conditions (ie, with heating, radio and lights on). While this is fine for city driving, for which they are designed, it is not suitable for long drives and for getting away from it all – which is what campervans are all about. There are no charging points in rural areas and all the wild beauty spots where campervans belong.

How efficient is the hybrid Alphard Eco Camper?

The hybrid Alphard achieves about twice the fuel efficiency specified by Japanese 2010 Fuel Efficiency Standards, while also qualifying as an ultra-low emission vehicle, consuming fuel at the rate of one litre every 17.2km (in the Japanese 10-15 test cycle). This equates to around 43mpg. Our own road tests found these vehicles provide around 41mpg. With LPG often less than half the price of petrol or diesel, this can give up to 80mpg when compared financially pound for pound with other fuels.

Why should I opt for a tribrid Eco Camper?

The tribrid is the world’s first tri-power campervan and introduces the latest in LPG technology to create safe and natural gas power that works alongside the petrol and electric power options. LPG (or Autogas) is roughly half the price of petrol – saving you considerable money. LPG is also much cleaner than petrol, with a fraction of the exhaust toxins. This makes the tribrid not only much more economical (at around 80mpg in financial terms), but the ultimate eco-friendly campervan.

How easy is it to find LPG filling stations and what happens if I run out of LPG?

The LPG systems we fit are self-starting, which means the LPG switches on automatically and, when you run out, switches back to petrol. Most motorway service stations and some in-town petrol garages sell LPG for fuelling.

Is finance available?

Yes. Our finance partners offer a range of finance options on all campervan orders. For more details, visit our finance page

What is the road tax and insurance on this vehicle?

Because the base vehicles are imported from Japan, there is a blanket import road-tax levy – currently £270. Insurance varies according to age, driving history and postcode. Premiums are typically between £250 and £700, although these can be higher if you live in the centre of a busy city, have just obtained your driving licence or have recent claims or convictions. Call us for details of good insurers, we are happy to help.

Can I buy this on the European continent?

Yes. We can export to all EU countries (transportation costs apply). Please note the Toyota Alphard Eco Explorer and Pioneer models come in a right-hand drive only. Please consult with your local importation office to check rules and regulations applying to campervan and vehicle importation before buying.

Can I buy this in the US or Canada?

Not yet. There are considerable import restrictions to vehicles into both countries that prevent sales there for the time being. But watch this space, we are looking at solutions and keen to make these available in North America.
